Rising Strength: How Women Are Shaping a More Resilient, Sustainable Future

At EngenderHealth, we are committed to putting women and girls first in our efforts to address the environmental threats that deeply affect reproductive health, gender-based violence (GBV), and overall well-being.

We believe women and girls must not only be included in conversations around environmental resilience—they must lead them. This belief drives our work worldwide, from humanitarian settings to fragile regions

Environmental Pressures, Gendered Consequences

Environmental harm goes beyond land and water—it disrupts lives. The ripple effects of droughts, floods, resource scarcity, and displacement impact everyone, but women and girls are often hit hardest. These challenges deepen inequalities in access to healthcare, increase vulnerability to GBV, and jeopardize futures.

In countries where we work like Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and Mali, women face overlapping threats—environmental, political, and economic—that compromise their ability to access critical services.

In Mali, we’ve reached more than 967,000 households in conflict-affected areas, delivering vital health services, child immunizations, and nutrition support despite ongoing uncertainty. In Burkina Faso, where political instability and food insecurity are compounded by environmental pressures, EngenderHealth’s intersectional approach ensures access to reproductive health care, GBV prevention, and emergency support.

Why Putting Women First Matters

Women and girls are the backbone of resilient communities. They play an important role in recovery after disasters and in strengthening systems that can withstand future shocks. But when their rights are overlooked—when healthcare is out of reach or violence goes unchecked—the whole community suffers.

By supporting women and girls, we are investing in healthier individuals and stronger systems. Our work integrates reproductive health with environmental resilience, so women can thrive even in the most challenging conditions. Whether we’re providing essential care in drought-prone parts of Ethiopia or supporting survivors of GBV in Benin, EngenderHealth builds systems that prioritize women’s rights and environmental stability.

EngenderHealth’s Commitment to Resilience

True resilience isn’t about short-term fixes—it’s about lasting systems change. That’s why we strengthen health infrastructure, foster local leadership, and ensure women have the tools and knowledge to adapt and thrive.

Through partnerships with governments, communities, and grassroots organizations, we’re developing long-term solutions that protect women’s health and rights in the face of ongoing environmental challenges.
