When Hymanot began medical school in Ethiopia, she—like many of her peers—carried biases about abortion shaped by stigma and misinformation. But after attending a comprehensive abortion care training supported by EngenderHealth, her perspective shifted. She learned the truth about the safety and significance of abortion services, and how health providers can support patients with dignity and compassion.
Now, Hymanot is committed to delivering respectful, rights-based care and advocating for improved access to abortion for all who need it. “It’s not just about health,” she says. “It’s about justice.”
Why Does Abortion Access Matter?
Each year, more than 35 million unsafe abortions occur worldwide, endangering the lives and well-being of millions, especially those in marginalized and underserved communities. Safe abortion care is essential healthcare. Without access to accurate information, supportive providers, and timely services, people face devastating consequences.
