Meet Massiamy

In a rural village in Guinea, Massiamy went into labor with her second child. Hours passed. Then a full day. With no skilled provider nearby and no way to reach a hospital, Massiamy endured an obstructed labor that claimed her baby’s life, and left her with a debilitating injury called obstetric fistula. She was devastated, isolated, and in pain.

But that’s not where her story ends.

Thanks to a local hospital supported by EngenderHealth, Massiamy received free, life-changing surgery to repair her injury. She also received counseling and skills training to rebuild her confidence and rejoin her community. Today, Massiamy is healthy, hopeful, and thriving with her family.

What is the Global Impact of Maternal Health Risks?

More than 700 women die every day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth—most of them preventable. For every woman who dies, many more face injuries, trauma, and long-term health issues like obstetric fistula. These tragedies impact not only individuals but also families, communities, and future generations.

EngenderHealth works to change this.
