From Struggling Street Vendor to Respected Peer Educator: Hilda’s Story of Growth and Empowerment

In the far corners of Zogolo ward in Nzega Town Council in Tanzania, where opportunities for young women are often limited, a quiet revolution is underway, led by a 20-year-old young woman named Hilda.

Born into a family of smallholder farmers, Hilda was the last-born child in a household that worked hard to meet their basic needs. After finishing secondary school in 2021, college dreams faded quickly under the weight of financial hardship.

Like many girls in her community, Hilda faced a stark reality: no job, no income, and little hope of advancing her education.

To survive, she turned to the only opportunity she could find—selling porridge and milk near the mining areas. Under the scorching sun, carrying heavy loads and navigating unsafe spaces, Hilda earned barely TSH 3,000–5,000 ($1-2 USD) a day, well short of the $200 USD a month that is estimated for a decent standard of living*. There was no stability, no protection, and no future in sight.

“I had big dreams to attain financial stability and contribute positively to my community,” says Hilda. “But I had no knowledge about nutrition, hygiene, business pricing—or even what a good business plan looked like.”

A Turning Point: BRIGHT Ignites a Spark

Everything began to change in 2023, when Hilda joined a girls’ peer group led by Tausi Nshimo, a trained peer educator. Taushi had been trained under the Building Rights for Improved Girl’s Health in Tanzania (BRIGHT) project, implemented by EngenderHealth. As Hilda stood in a circle of 25 other adolescent girls, she found something she’d never had before: support, sisterhood, and peer learning. The sessions covered entrepreneurship, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), nutrition, and life skills.

Inspired by the peer educators and new learning, Hilda took a leap: she applied to become a BRIGHT peer educator and was accepted. Over six days of intensive training, she learned about budgeting, saving, nutrition, family planning, adolescent rights, and more.

“For the first time, I understood what it meant to take charge of my own life,” she says. “These sessions helped me discover my potential, and build a clear direction for my future.”

A Business is Born—And a Leader Rises

Using the TSH 300,000 (about $111 USD) stipend she earned from BRIGHT, Hilda launched a modest but promising restaurant in her village.

No longer an informal street vendor, she became a business owner, and she implemented everything she’d learned.

She improved hygiene, diversified her menu, and promoted her services more widely.

Today, her business is valued at over TSH 400 (about $148 USD), generating daily profits of TSH 15,000–25,000 ($6-9 USD). She employs two fellow youths—including one youth that she mentors.

But Hilda’s transformation didn’t stop with earning a profit.

She joined a savings group to help manage and grow her existing income. And, she has become a respected figure in her community, serving as a mentor for adolescent girls just like her.

“Now I can buy food, clothing, and small household expenses. This has helped me become independent, no longer relying on my parents or the community around me.”

From Beneficiary to Changemaker

Armed with confidence and conviction, Hilda has now formed three peer groups, reaching 60 adolescents with critical education on SRH, life skills, nutrition, and self-care. Her sessions have led to tangible results: more adolescents are able to access health services, more are delaying early marriage, and many more are reimagining their futures.

One girl, just 17, decided to postpone marriage after attending a session on the risks of early marriage. These moments, Hilda says, are what drive her.

“The BRIGHT project did not just help me economically, it also changed how I took care of my health. I now practice good nutrition and understand the importance of protecting myself from risky behaviors. I have chosen to abstain from sex as a personal protection strategy, and I know that self-awareness is one of the strongest tools I have.”

Hilda’s decision to abstain from sex—as a deeply personal, informed choice—reflects the empowerment that comes from gaining knowledge and building her self-confidence. She is leading, mentoring, and redefining what is possible for adolescent girls in her community.

Her success demonstrates how BRIGHT is not only transforming individual lives but also reshaping social norms around gender, empowerment, and adolescent health and well-being.
