Meet Dahabo
In rural Ethiopia, where access to healthcare is limited and myths about contraception persist, Dahabo Gimbe is creating change. As a family planning service provider and dedicated health extension worker, Dahabo not only provides essential care—she listens, informs, and empowers. Her warm, respectful approach helps clients feel safe and confident in their choices about whether and when to have children.
With support from EngenderHealth, Dahabo received training and mentorship to provide high-quality, rights-based contraceptive care. She now helps women and couples understand their options, make informed decisions, and access the methods that best fit their needs and lives. In doing so, she contributes to transformational change, not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
Why Does Contraceptive Access Matter?
More than 200 million women and girls worldwide want to avoid pregnancy but are not using modern contraception—putting their health, rights, and futures at risk. Contraception is essential not only for preventing unintended pregnancies but also for enabling women and girls to pursue education, careers, and personal goals. It strengthens families, economies, and health systems.
What Your Support Makes Possible
Your support helps EngenderHealth partner with governments, community organizations, and healthcare providers to:
- Improve the safety, efficacy, and quality of family planning services
- Increase contraceptive options, including methods like intrauterine devices that women can continue to use for years if they wish
- Ensure clients can make informed choices based on accurate information and personal preferences
- Strengthen cost-effectiveness and expand access by integrating contraception with HIV care, maternal health, immunizations, STI screening, and more
In the past year alone, EngenderHealth’s work helped to prevent more than 2 million unintended pregnancies and served nearly 1.3 million people with contraceptive care across Africa and Asia.
