Expanding Contraceptive Choice: Early Lessons and Insights from the Introduction of Hormonal IUD (HIUD) into the Ethiopian Public Health System
What does it take to introduce a new contraceptive method into a public health system? Drawing on early experience from 40 health facilities in Ethiopia, this learning brief shares lessons from the introduction of the hormonal IUD, including provider training, facility readiness, supply chain integration, counseling, and data systems. As of June 2026, more than 1,000 clients had accessed hormonal IUD services, offering early insights for future scale-up and expanded contraceptive choice.
