Under Dr. A.K. Jha’s leadership, EngenderHealth’s Tarunya project strengthened adolescent health systems in Bihar by expanding access to youth-friendly services, reducing early marriage, and fostering supportive communities. His vision and commitment helped transform local health care for young people—laying the groundwork for a stronger, healthier future.

“All adolescents should be empowered to make informed decisions about their life and health. I am doing my part to make this happen.”

With support from EngenderHealth’s TARUNYA project, the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK)—India’s National Adolescent Health Program—is gaining new momentum in Sitamarhi, Bihar, India. The project supports the government to strengthen and integrate community-based adolescent health initiatives, including:

At the center of this progress is Dr. A.K. Jha, Sitamarhi’s District Immunization Officer and a dedicated advocate for adolescent health. As a pivotal figure in the program’s implementation at the district level, Dr. Jha’s profound commitment to the improvement of adolescent health has not only established government ownership of this program but has also paved the way for sustainability and accountability across the entire implementation chain

Championing Coordination and Government Ownership

Dr. Jha’s hands-on approach has created a culture of accountability and ownership across all levels of the health system. By coordinating with local health teams and civil society organizations (CSOs), he ensures adolescent health services are effectively delivered and sustainably managed.

His efforts show how government leadership—combined with technical support from projects like TARUNYA—can strengthen systems and achieve lasting change for young people.

Integrating Adolescent Health into the System

A medical professional with deep technical expertise, Dr. Jha brings credibility and precision to his work. His understanding of the healthcare landscape and the needs of adolescents has helped Sitamarhi’s RKSK activities become more coordinated, comprehensive, and community-centered.

Under his guidance, the district has stronger linkages between schools, clinics, and community groups—ensuring that adolescents can access the information and care they need to make informed choices.

Sustaining the Future of Adolescent Health

Dr. Jha’s model of government-led, community-supported action shows how collaboration can sustain adolescent health programs long after external projects end. His work stands as a model for how state systems can integrate adolescent reproductive health into routine health delivery for the long term.
