In rural Bihar, Chandni Kumari’s journey shows how determination, and the right opportunities, can transform a young woman’s future. From caring for her siblings in the small village of Jamuara Kala to discovering her passion for hospitality through EngenderHealth’s TARUNYA project, Chandni’s story reflects the power of support, determination, and education to change lives.

Discovering a Path Through Peer Education

In the quiet village of Jamuara Kala, in Bihar, India, 19-year-old Chandni’s story of resilience unfolded against the backdrop of family responsibilities. Tasked with caring for her younger sister and two brothers, she found herself at a crossroads after finishing her matriculation.

In a place where dreams often wither under financial and social pressures, Chandni carved her own path through an unexpected journey: becoming a Peer Educator with the TARUNYA project, which drew on India’s national adolescent health program (RKSK).

As a Peer Educator, she guided her peers in sessions on six important topics: nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, non-communicable diseases, substance misuse, injuries and violence (including gender-based violence), and mental health.

Through these sessions, Chandni not only learned critical information herself but also shared it with others, building confidence and leadership skills along the way.

Opening Doors to New Opportunities

Chandni dreamed of working in hospitality, but financial constraints threatened to keep that dream out of reach.

Her time as a Peer Educator didn’t just give her knowledge—it opened doors. One of those doors led Chandni to Pratham Education, a partner of TARUNYA that trained adolescents in hotel management.

This connection unveiled a new path forward. Through the Key to Your Potential program, Chandni enrolled in a hotel management course, beginning her journey from student to skilled professional.

Chandni’s Journey into Hotel Management

With support from EngenderHealth and its local partner MAMTA-HMIC, Chandni completed a two-month course that refined her communication skills, public speaking, and—most importantly—her confidence to pursue her dreams.

For Chandni, the hospitality program was more than a class; it was a chance to turn her passion into a profession. She found not just a job, but the realization of her aspirations.

“I want to fly and make people fly with me in life and achieve everything they deserve,” says Chandni.
