Against Patriarchy, Toward Educational Excellence: Usha’s Story from Bihar, India

Overcoming Barriers to Education

For many adolescents in rural India, the path from education to opportunity is often interrupted by economic hardship and restrictive social norms. Despite these challenges, Usha Kumari excelled in her Class 12 examinations. However, the joy of her accomplishments as an 18-year-old was overshadowed by a harsh reality: her aspirations for higher education were affected by her family’s economic background. Under the weight of parental pressure, Usha was pushed towards an early marriage.

Finding Opportunities Through Training

Usha refused to give up. With resilience as her guide, she pursued scholarships and financial aid. Community members and teachers recognized her dedication and stepped in to support her education.

“Main padoongi, padaoongee aur sabko aage badhaoongi.”

“I will study, I will teach, and I will advance everyone.”

– Usha Kumari

Her words became both a personal mantra and a rallying call for others in her community.

Becoming a Peer Educator

Usha’s turning point came when EngenderHealth’s TARUNYA project reached her village. The TARUNYA outreach team invited her to train as a Peer Educator, drawing on trainings from India’s Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK). With guidance from the local Yuva Clinic (Adolescent-Friendly Health Clinic, AFHC), she received counseling and—through persistence—convinced her mother to delay her marriage and support her education.

From Peer Educator to Youth Trainer

Against all odds, she paved the way for her own educational success, challenging not only the limitations imposed by financial constraints but also the deeply ingrained societal norms that often restrict girls in rural communities from pursuing higher education. The support she received from the TARUNYA and RKSK programs and the EngenderHealth team was instrumental in her evolution from a Peer Educator to a Youth Trainer.

From Peer Educator to Youth Trainer, Usha has grown into a confident leader whose story inspires others to dream beyond imposed limits. Her strength and determination set an example for her peers, showing that challenging harmful norms is possible—and necessary—for progress.

Though the TARUNYA project has ended, its legacy endures in Usha and in other young people who continue to strengthen their communities through their work. By breaking barriers in her own life and opening doors for others, Usha shows that true, lasting change begins with the courage to lead.
