Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Organization Now Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations

November 30, 2020 (Washington, DC)—EngenderHealth, a global organization advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality, announced that it is equipped to accept cryptocurrency donations for #GivingTuesday/#BitcoinTuesday, both of which will be celebrated on December 1 this year. EngenderHealth is among the first organizations in the reproductive health space to add cryptocurrency to its fundraising capabilities. This new capacity is part of EngenderHealth’s efforts to expand its donor base and provide current donors with more ways to support sexual and reproductive health and rights.

“EngenderHealth donors are motivated by our mission and our impact,” says EngenderHealth Director of Philanthropy, Audrey M. Johnson. “Donating should be as easy as possible to enable supporters to act on their passion for our work. With more people using cryptocurrency, adding this donation option is a natural progression in how we work with donors.”

EngenderHealth is now able to accept multiple cryptocurrencies through a dedicated page on its website: https://www.engenderhealth.org/help/donate-cryptocurrency/. Accepted cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Zcash (ZEC), Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Basic Attention Token (BAT), and Chainlink (LINK).

By accepting cryptocurrencies, EngenderHealth is offering supporters with cryptocurrency portfolios the ability to support the organization any time, including on #GivingTuesday. The IRS generally classifies cryptocurrency donations as property, meaning in most instances they are not subject to capital gains tax and are tax deductible on the donor’s tax returns.

EngenderHealth has worked internationally for 50 years in more 100 countries in that time. With restricted project grants making up a large portion of its funding, individual donors play a key role by providing critical unrestricted support that allows the organization to grow and to support operations not funded by grants. About 75 cents of every dollar EngenderHealth raises goes directly to program services, and less than 1% of funds are used for fundraising.

EngenderHealth is working with The Giving Block, leaders in equipping nonprofits with the tools and techniques to effectively fundraise with cryptocurrency. “We’re excited to be working with The Giving Block,” says Johnson, “and for the opportunity to engage with new supporters around the world.”

About EngenderHealth

EngenderHealth envisions a gender-equal world where all people achieve their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). To reach that vision, we implement high-quality, gender-equitable programs that advance SRHR, which we define broadly to include contraceptive counseling and services, maternal health, comprehensive sexuality education, gender-based violence prevention and counseling, comprehensive abortion care, and more. EngenderHealth collaborates with governments, private sector partners, international experts, and local organizations and communities to reach marginalized groups—including girls, women, and gender minorities; adolescents and youth; people with disabilities; economically disadvantaged groups; and rural and other hard-to-reach populations. www.engenderhealth.org
