As vaccination levels rise and infection and death rates decline, it will be tempting to simply return to the way we did things in the past. What we should do, instead, is to build back better, build back fairer, build back stronger. That’s what we’re trying to do at EngenderHealth.

With support from UNICEF, EngenderHealth embarked on a two-month project to improve the survival of newborn girls by addressing gender differentials in newborn care.
As we reflect on 2020, we pause to appreciate EngenderHealth program leaders who went above and beyond, day after day.
EngenderHealth’s India team has been working to strengthen the systems of 144 health facilities to ensure they are fully stocked with available contraceptive methods during the pandemic. To date, the team has helped to resolve contraceptive stockouts at roughly 37 of those facilities.
The latest disturbing news coming from Chhattisgarh, India, reminds us that despite being 20 years post-ICPD, we global health professionals have more to do to ensure reproductive rights, choice, and quality of care. And as the story goes—as it has too many times before—the devastating consequences are borne by mostly poor, rural women. It’s unconscionable.
