Before initiating couples counselling, health providers should ensure that the client wants to have his or her partner involved.

If the client has come to the clinic alone and the provider recommends couples counselling or the client asks whether her/his partner can attend:

Note: There may be cases in which a mother, mother-in-law or other family member accompanies the client. The same procedure should be used to ensure that the client truly wants that person involved in the counselling.
