The RESPOND Project
From 2008 to 2014, EngenderHealth was the managing partner of the project Responding to the Need for Family Planning through Expanded Contraceptive Choices and Program Services (RESPOND). Supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), RESPOND expanded family planning services and improved reproductive health in 11 countries.
The aim of RESPOND was to increase access to a range of contraceptives, with particular focus on long-acting and permanent methods. These effective methods (implants, IUDs, and male and female sterilization) remain underutilized in many developing countries, even though they are safe, convenient, and cost-effective. To do so, RESPOND followed a holistic model:
- Improving the quality and supply of family planning
- Strengthening the demand for family planning among clients
- Advocating with local officials for supportive policies and increased resources
The project's online Digital Archive contains a wide range of materials that were developed at both the global and the country levels: conceptual models, programmatic tools, technical guidance, advocacy briefs, videos, and more.
