Answer to Case Study #4:Since Jasmine has not had sex since her first diagnosis and did not finish her full course of antibiotics, it is most likely that her original infection was not cured rather than that she is experiencing a reinfection. Jasmine should be given a course of treatment again and counseled on the importance of completing the regimen even if she feels better or the symptoms go away. Explore with Jasmine whether any other barriers may prevent her from adhering to treatment. Encourage her to return to the clinic if she experiences side effects, such as nausea, or has any concerns. Will her husband return soon? If so, make sure that either they avoid sex until she has completed treatment and her husband has also been treated or they use condoms. Review condom skills with Jasmine to make sure she knows how to use condoms correctly. Review strategies for talking about condom use with her husband. Emphasize the dual benefits of condom use for the prevention of infection and pregnancy. Perhaps if she does not feel comfortable talking to her husband about condoms to prevent infection, she can explore the use of condoms as a family planning method. If female condoms are available in your area, discuss with Jasmine the possibility of her using them. Offer to invite her husband to meet with you separately or together with Jasmine.
