Preventing STIs/RHIs

Answer to Case Study #2:

Josephine is in the pre-contemplation stage because she is not aware that she is at risk. You can support her by providing information about what STIs are, how they are transmitted, and how she can protect herself. Make her aware that her present behavior (having sex without condoms) has placed her at risk for infection, but that she can take action to get treated and protect herself from further infection. You can tell her about condom use, demonstrate the proper use of condoms, and have her practice putting a condom on a penis model. If female condoms are available in your area, discuss with Josephine the possibility of her using them. You can encourage her to communicate with her boyfriend about STIs and protecting themselves. This includes making sure that he gets treated for chlamydia as well or else they can reinfect each other. You can offer to speak to him separately or with Josephine, if she thinks that this would be helpful.
