Diagnosis of STIs/RTIs

  1. Educational Activities: Hold a session with staff and colleagues to discuss the pros and cons of each of the three management approaches. This link contains information that can be used to address some common concerns of health care providers about using the syndromic approach:
  2. Update on STI/RTI Diagnostics. This document gives a basic update on the types of diagnostic tests for STIs and RTIs with a brief description of each.
  3. Algorithms (flowcharts). The following set of algorithms can be supplemented with data on local prevalence and adapted for use in your facility.

Treating STIs/RTIs

  1. Reference. The following CDC guidelines for treatment of STIs contain information on laboratory tests, drugs used for treatment, and related information pertaining to the management of common STIs.

  2. Sample Partner Notification/Referral Cards. Partner referral may be enhanced by the use of special cards given to the client to pass on to his or her other sex partners, which can also help clinicians provide prompt diagnosis and treatment when partners come to a facility for care. The following are three sample cards used for this purpose.

One set of cards is designed for use in sites in which syndromic management is used, the other set for sites in which etiologic management is used.
