Diagnosis of STIs/RHIs

Answer to Case Study #3:

Any sexual activity, even with condom use, can still present some risk for infection. With some STIs like chancroid, condoms may not cover all infected areas of the skin, leading to possible routes of transmission.

In order to support Caroline, you must address the fact that her boyfriend must have had at least one other partner in order for her to have chancroid. You should counsel her about her feelings about her boyfriend’s infidelity and work with her to develop strategies for talking about it with him, if she desires. You should praise her for using condoms and support her continued use of them. Emphasize that even though she has chancroid, it is curable and that condoms will protect her against other STIs for which there is no cure, such as HIV. Also, the condom, when used consistently and correctly, is a reliable method of family planning. If female condoms are available in your area, you could explore the possibility of Caroline using them because they provide more coverage of the genital area than male condoms.
