Maiking It Work

Case Studies

These case studies are designed to be completed after you have studied the content in each module, but you can complete them at any time you feel ready. Case studies allow you to apply what you have learned in this course to real-world situations.

Case Study #1:

Ms. W is a married woman seeking counseling at a health clinic. She is concerned that her husband is homosexual because he wants her to have anal sex. Using the ideas (sexual orientation, sexual behavior, sexual practices, and gender identity) in this module, explain what Ms. W is confused about.

Could Ms. W’s assumption be correct?

Answer

Case Study #2:

Marcia is married with seven children and a husband who works a distance from home. Marcia’s days involve feeding the children and getting them to school, cleaning the house, maintaining the garden behind the house, hauling water, cooking, and doing laundry for a few women who work in offices. At the end of the day, after feeding and putting the children to bed, Marcia is exhausted; however, her husband expects to have sexual relations with her whenever he wants. All women in the community are expected to accommodate their husbands’ demands—and she is too.

According to the definitions provided in this section, is the expectation that Marcia will cooperate with her husband’s sexual demands determined by her sex or her gender?

Explain your answer using the terms (sex, gender, and gender role) as defined in this module.

Answer

Case Study #3:

Marcia had a particularly hectic day when two of her clients needed to have laundry done today because their families were traveling. As Marcia and her husband were retiring for bed, she told her husband that she was too tired to have sex. He became angry and forced himself on her, using his physical strength and hurting her. Marcia was frightened, but she knew that there was no help for her: after all, it was his right within the law.

How does a law against marital rape protect a woman’s human rights?

Answer

Case Study #4:

Dr. Angelina works in a women’s health clinic as the primary care provider in her community and is highly respected. She is very popular with adolescents, who go to talk with her during the evening hours, when they know that they will find her weaving in a shed a short distance from her home. The local high school has recently instituted a sexuality (family life) education course, but several students are confused about the information that is given, and the teacher does not accept questions from the students. A couple of students have come to Dr. Angelina’s shed, asking if “oral sex is a sin” in their religion. They have been taught that it is, but they have heard many people saying they do this.

Explain how formal and informal values and religion are reflected in this situation.

Answer

Case Study #5:

Dr. Angelina had a visit from Sara, a young female student, who was very upset because she was approached by a fellow female student who said she was having romantic feelings toward Sara. Sara did not understand how this could be possible.

How could Dr. Angelina explain sexual orientation to Sara?
