Sexual response and Sexual Practices

Answer to Case Study #3:

Explain to Brigitte that sexual activity can continue until the end of life; however, aging does slow down responses and function—this is normal. Menopause’s dramatic reduction of hormone levels (estrogen, progesterone) causes physical changes in the genitalia that can pose sexual difficulties (e.g., discomfort from vaginal thinning and reduced lubrication). Reduced testosterone is associated with loss of or diminished libido (sexual desire). Brigitte’s partner may like to consider talking with her health care provider about managing the loss of libido with testosterone supplementation. Assure Brigitte that her sexual life will not disappear when she reaches menopause. Her awareness of the normal changes will help her and her partner decide what to do and when to seek help from their health care providers. Offer to talk with Brigitte’s partner, with or without Brigitte present.
