Sexual response and Sexual Practices

Answer to Case Study #1:

Explain to Comfort that within a woman’s genital tract are glands that produce lubricating fluid when she is sexually aroused. It is a normal response and a key sign that the woman has achieved excitement. The lubrication (or wetness) is nature’s way of protecting the delicate vaginal tissues from possible irritation from the friction of penile-vaginal intercourse. If penile penetration occurs before lubrication, friction can cause abrasions (breaks in the skin or tissues), resulting in pain, bleeding, and an opening through which infections, including HIV, can enter the system. Some cultures use herbs or special preparations to cause vaginal dryness, which is believed to enhance men’s pleasure, but this practice puts women at risk of tissue damage and infection. Offer Comfort the support of inviting her husband to discuss the issue. Assist Comfort in explaining normal lubrication to her husband through role play.
