Maiking It Work

Case Studies

These case studies are designed to be completed after you have studied the content in each module, but you can complete them at any time you feel ready. Case studies allow you to apply what you have learned in this course to real-world situations.

Case Study #1:

Several weeks ago you referred Ms. Bright to your colleague to assess a breast mass that has turned out to be cancer. The specialist has determined that a mastectomy is indicated. Ms. Bright returns today to discuss what to expect following a mastectomy. She and her partner have had a very satisfying sex life, and she wants to know how the surgery will affect it. What can you tell her about the effects of breast cancer therapies on sexuality?

Answer

Case Study #2:

Mr. Donner is accompanying his wife to an unscheduled visit three months after a hysterectomy. Mr. Donner uncomfortably asks you if he and his wife will ever be able to have sex again. Mrs. Donner says that she feels no desire and that when they tried to have sex three weeks ago, she did not feel stimulated and found it to be painful.

What could be the contributing factors?

Case Study #3:

Ms. Owa comes to talk with you because she does not know what to tell her daughter. Her 12-year-old daughter has complained that her left breast area has been hurting, and it was slightly swollen.

What guidance can you give Ms. Owa regarding what to expect as her daughter develops over the next three to four years?

After explaining to her daughter what is happening to her body, Ms. Owa returns to tell you that her son came home from physical-education class very upset because the other boys teased him about his “baby penis,” that he will “never be a man with such a tiny thing.” Her son is 10 years old. What guidance can you give her about her son’s development over the next three to four years?
