Answer to Case Study #1:Explore with the aunt what she knows about HIV and other STIs, clarifying myths and misinformation. Review with her the routes of transmission and how to prevent HIV. Assure her that using the same utensils or sleeping in the same house as someone with HIV does not put you at risk for HIV. Assure her, too, that she does not need to worry that her niece has been exposed to HIV by using Lis cup. Gently discuss issues of fear, stigma, and discrimination around HIV/AIDS. Explore the aunts relationship with Li, as well as how the family gets along in general. Try to help her to understand Lis perspective. Once her fears are allayed, suggest that she start working with the family to reintegrate Li into the family. Invite her to come back to talk with you with some of the other family members, including Li.
