Answer to Case Study #3: Find out what Mabel knows
about HIV and other STIs, clarifying any myths or misinformation. Review
with her the routes of transmission and how to prevent HIV. Find out what
she knows about condoms. Make sure that Mabel knows how to use condoms
correctly by observing her put one on a penis model. Discuss strategies
for motivating her partners to use condoms, and practice these communication
skills through role plays. If female condoms are available in your area,
discuss with Mabel the possibility of her using them. Explore with Mabel
how she feels about her circumstances in general and her sex life in particular.
Why does she not trust her sex partner? Does she know if he has had any
STIs or if he has HIV? Has she ever had STIs? How does she perceive her
own risk for infection? Depending on the availability and accessibility
of HIV testing services, you might discuss the option of HIV testing with
Mabel, explain what the "window period" is, and let her know
that if she has had unprotected sex in the past three months, she should
get tested.
