Answer to Case Study #1:Acknowledge and appreciate Martinas concern for her baby and the effort that she has made to come to the clinic. Since Martina does not have reliable access to safe, clean water and little money to purchase formula, reassure her that breastfeeding is the best way to care for her infant. Tell her that breastfeeding will protect her baby from many infections that can cause illness and even death. Address and acknowledge both the communitys norms and Martinas fears that if she does not breastfeed, people will figure out that she has HIV. Encourage Martina to breastfeed exclusively and to avoid giving the child other supplemental liquids or solids while breastfeeding because mixed feeding (i.e., breast milk and supplements together) has been associated with higher rates of HIV infection.
