Case Studies

These case studies are designed to be completed after you have studied the content in each section, but you can complete them any time you feel ready. Case studies allow you to apply what you have learned in this course to real-world situations.

Case Study #1:

A small rural clinic is located in a country in which the price of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) has recently been reduced dramatically. The district in which the clinic is located has a high prevalence of HIV. The clinic staff members want to do something for the community and decide to look into the possibility of providing ARVs for HIV treatment. The clinic has erratic electricity. Sometimes days can pass before power is restored. Not all of the people in the surrounding village have access to clean, safe water. The clinic stocks some family planning methods and antibiotics but has never developed comprehensive systems for logistics or record keeping. The nearest health care facility that can do lab tests is located a half day’s walk away.

Would providing ARVs to clients be an effective use of resources for the clinic?
