Diagnosis and Testing

Answer to Case Study #4:

The nurse has not handled the situation appropriately because HIV testing should be performed with the voluntary (not forced) consent of the client. Furthermore, the clinic does not have the right to deny services to clients regardless of their HIV status or “how they look.” The staff should follow standard precautions to protect themselves while providing services, such as tubal ligations. Following standard precautions reduces the risk that staff will be exposed to infection.
