Answer to Case Study #2:Although the test is negative, Clarice still needs to be concerned about her health and to learn how to protect herself from infection. Make sure that Clarice understands the meaning of the test results. Explain what the window period is, and let her know that if she has had unprotected sex in the past three months, she should get tested again. In other words, she should test again three months after the date of her last possible exposure to make sure that she has not been infected with HIV but has not yet developed antibodies. In the meantime, you and Clarice should develop a plan together for how she will protect herself against future infection. Find out what she knows about HIV and other STIs, and clarify any misinformation. Explain what STIs are, the routes of transmission, and how to prevent STIs. Make sure that Clarice knows how to use condoms correctly by observing her put one on a penis model. Discuss strategies for motivating her partners to use condoms, and practice these communication skills through role plays. If female condoms are available in your area, discuss with Clarice the possibility of her using them.
