Answer to Case Study #1:It is essential to prevent the exposure of confidential information regarding a clients HIV status to unauthorized persons. The first mistake occurred when the nurse casually told Anita about Rinas situation. The second mistake occurred when Anita leaked the information to her mother. Unfortunately, the stigma and anxiety around HIV/AIDS can damage relationships, pit community members against each other, and result in situations of violence and discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS. Given these very real threats, it is imperative that health care facilities develop policies for keeping sensitive information confidential. Private client information must not be made accessible to other clients or community members through careless record storage, lack of private space for confidential counseling, or inappropriate discussion of client information within or outside the clinic setting.
