On July 21, 2010, Paul Perchal, director of EngenderHealth’s HIV/STI Program, announced the formation of the Stigma Action Network (SAN), which will help combat HIV-related stigma and maximize the global response to AIDS. EngenderHealth holds a seat on the SAN’s inaugural steering committee.
This coordinated global network will enable people involved in programs, research, and advocacy to act and forge new commitments locally, regionally, and globally to reduce HIV-related stigma.
“Currently, there are many diverse stakeholders working in isolation. The network will allow for greater collective action within and across these dedicated groups,” said Perchal.
Through an interactive web site that will launch in December 2010, the network will share information and facilitate the exchange of experiences and lessons among activists worldwide. This improved communication and coordination will lead to better research, programming, and advocacy among those committed to ending HIV-related stigma.
“Reducing HIV stigma and discrimination has been a critical component of EngenderHealth’s work for the last eight years, and we know eliminating this stigma is imperative for meeting the goal of universal access to HIV care and treatment,” said Perchal, adding, “EngenderHealth is proud to be one of the cofounders of this new network.”
