Just after Mother’s Day, Rep. Lois Capps (D.-Calif.) introduced an important new bill in the House of Representatives that would improve access to lifesaving care for women and infants around the world. The Improvements in Global Maternal and Newborn Health Outcomes While Maximizing Successes Act, also known as the Global MOMS Act, would expand access to health services and reduce maternal mortality.

Implemented through the government’s Global Health Initiative, the legislation would also improve coordination among U.S. agencies already working to provide health care and family planning information and services.

Along with the three other bills recently introduced in Congress—the Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Act of 2010, the Global Democracy Promotion Act, and the Global HEALTH Act—the Global MOMS Act is one more signal that momentum and interest in reproductive health care are at a high.
