EngenderHealth Mourns the Loss of Dr. Allan Rosenfield

Extraordinary Leader and Advocate for Women, Global Public Health, and Vulnerable Populations

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Allan Rosenfield, Dean Emeritus of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and a member of EngenderHealth’s Board of Directors for more than 30 years. Dr. Rosenfield was a leading voice for women’s reproductive health and human rights, innovative family planning policies, and programs to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS throughout the world.  As an active and influential Board member, Dr. Rosenfield’s technical knowledge, insights, and his passion and concern for the right of poor people everywhere to have high quality health care, significantly influenced and impacted EngenderHealth’s programs.

Dr. Rosenfield, an obstetrician and gynecologist by training, was a pioneer in drawing global attention to the need for improving maternal health and a relentless advocate for women’s reproductive health and rights everywhere. Putting the ‘mother’ back in maternal and child health programs and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, he reminded everyone that women must not be neglected in addressing the care of newborns and children.

EngenderHealth is deeply indebted to Dr. Rosenfield for his countless contributions to the organization and the field at large. A man of extraordinary compassion, energy, and leadership, he will be sorely missed. We extend heartfelt condolences to his wife Clare, and the entire family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Allan Rosenfield Fund, Mailman School of Public Health, 722 W. 168th Street, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10032.
