EngenderHealth hosted the Fistula Partners’ Advisory Meeting in Accra, Ghana, April 15–17 on behalf of the Fistula Care, AWARE-RH, and ACQUIRE projects, which are managed by EngenderHealth. The gathering was a unique opportunity for health care professionals from across Africa and Bangladesh to come together, assess their work, and advance the state of the art in fistula care and prevention.
While several international fistula meetings have been held over the past few years, this meeting was the first to provide a forum for doctors who are providing fistula repair surgery with USAID support. It allowed those working on the front lines to have their voices heard more prominently and to contribute to policy decisions.
The meeting was held in both English and French and drew more than 80 participants, including doctors providing surgical fistula repair, program managers, and representatives from USAID missions, ministries of health, and partner organizations. Participants shared successes and challenges, identified areas needing improvement, and discussed strategies around preventing fistula and improving women’s access to repair services.
