This module provides information on two topics regarding preparation for surgical
procedures: proper surgical scrub and proper surgical attire. It includes
descriptions of each item of surgical attire and explains how to perform
surgical scrub and how to put on and remove surgical gloves.
Before beginning this module, it is recommended that you first complete the
Aseptic Technique module of this course.
Objectives Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:
- Describe the steps of surgical scrub
- For each item of surgical attire, describe the protection offered for both client and provider
- State the situations in which it is necessary to wear surgical attire
- Describe the options for surgical scrub and when these options should be used
- Demonstrate the correct way to put on and remove surgical gloves
Sterilization is the process that eliminates all microorganisms--including bacterial endospores--from surgical instruments, surgical attire, surgical drapes, and other items. High-level disinfection (HLD), which eliminates microorganisms (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) except for some bacterial endospores, is suitable for instruments and other items that will come in contact with broken skin or intact mucous membranes.
