Handwashing

More Information If running water is not available...

When running water is not available, use one of the following:

  • A bucket with a tap that can be turned off to lather hands and turned on again for rinsing. Collect used water in a basin and discard in a latrine if a drain is not available.
  • A bucket and pitcher. Using the pitcher, one person pours clear water over the hands of the person who is washing. Collect used water in the bucket and discard in a latrine, if a drain is not available.
  • Alcohol handrub, which does not require water. However, note that alcohol handrub can only be used when hands are not soiled with blood or dirt.

Remember!
Microorganisms grow and multiply in standing water. Therefore, you should avoid dipping or washing your hands in a basin that contains standing water, even if an antiseptic solution (such as Dettol or Savlon) is added. The water becomes easily contaminated from repeated use and from different people using it to wash their hands.
