For more than 100 years, research has shown that handwashing is the most important way to reduce the spread of infections in health care settings. However, health care workers wash their hands only about half as often as they should.
This module provides an overview of handwashing and explains why good handwashing practices are an essential--but often overlooked--part of infection prevention.
Objectives
When you complete this module, you should be able to:
- Explain the importance of routine handwashing
- List the most appropriate times to perform handwashing
- Explain the three different kinds of handwashing
- List the steps of routine handwashing
- Name three strategies that could help improve handwashing practices at your facility
Hands are the most common vehicle for transmitting infections. It is essential that all staff who come in contact with clients understand the importance of good handwashing practices.
