For more than 100 years, research has shown that handwashing is the most important way to reduce the spread of infections in health care settings. However, health care workers wash their hands only about half as often as they should.

This module provides an overview of handwashing and explains why good handwashing practices are an essential--but often overlooked--part of infection prevention.
