EngenderHealth's Online Infection Prevention Course

Credits

The development of this online Infection Prevention course--which is part of a three-year project to deliver Web and CD-ROM training to staff working in health facilities in the developing world--was made possible through a generous grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. EngenderHealth would like to thank the foundation for its continued support of this pilot project.

The content of this course is based upon EngenderHealth's Infection Prevention training curriculum, published in 1999. EngenderHealth would like to thank the staff and colleagues around the world who developed, reviewed, and tested this curriculum for providing the solid, comprehensive content on which this course was based. The curriculum was used and tested in Ghana, India, Egypt, and Kyrgyzstan. EngenderHealth especially appreciates the feedback provided by the following trainers: Dr. Alok Banerjee, Dr. S. S. Bodh, Dr. Saroj Gulati, Lucile James, Dr. Asha Kocchar, Dr. Isaiah Ndong, Dr. Rakhi Sahi, Dr. B. P. Singh, Dr. I. C. Tiwari, Dr. Jyoti Vaypayee, and Joan Venghaus.

EngenderHealth would like to extend special thanks to the health professionals throughout the developing world who have volunteered to test this course and to provide vital feedback that will enable EngenderHealth to make this and future courses serve the needs of the global health community. Particular thanks are due to the global health professionals who are acting as field-testers of this course and to those who have volunteered to participate in the instructor-led version of this course.

The repurposing of the curriculum as an online, self-instructional course was accomplished through the efforts of the following members of EngenderHealth's Distance Learning Team. Pamela Beyer Harper provided overall project management, coordinated field testing of the course, and reviewed all drafts of materials. Dr. Mark Barone and Karen Landovitz, the content developers of the original Infection Prevention curriculum, provided content expertise during all phases of the project, wrote some sections of the course, and aided in instructional design. Lucile James reviewed the content of the module. As the project's training expert, Phyllis Butta participated in the writing and review of the testing and training elements of the course. Karen Levin designed the course evaluation and testing mechanisms and developed the evaluation indicators for the course. William Lester and Cassandra Cook participated in the project's conceptualization and lent their technical expertise to the project throughout development and production.

As team leader of the project, Joanne Tzanis wrote and repurposed much of the course, was responsible for instructional design of the course, and provided the day-to-day management of the project. David Silverman, as Webmaster, was responsible for the coding, scripting, HTML specifications, and design of navigation and interactivity in the course and provided invaluable assistance in writing, evaluation, and instructional design. Stephanie Greig, graphic designer, rendered graphics and provided the clean and lively user interface for the course. Big Ripple, a multimedia production firm, Joan Hilty, and Tiina Aleman provided graphics and illustrations. Steven Nardi assisted with coding. Keith Edwards, Elkin Konuk, and Supranee Wangfeungkanagul tested loading time. Margaret Scanlon and Naadu Blankson-Seck participated in the project's conceptualization and provided editorial and production assistance throughout course development.
