Spread the Word about the Silver Ribbon Campaign
Marking the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, EngenderHealth joins more than 30 organizations in launching a Silver Ribbon Campaign to garner support for women’s health and rights. In the wake of a newly reconstituted Congress that is challenging health insurance coverage for abortion and family planning services, the campaign seeks to demonstrate the strength of support for reproductive rights. These efforts will stretch through “Trust Women Month” (January 22 to February 22). Among the goals of the campaign is support for free access to birth control under the health care reform law.

U.S. Teenage Birthrates Have Fallen to a Record Low
Birthrates for U.S. teenagers (ages 15–19) have hit an all-time low, at 39.1 births per 1,000 in 2009, according to a recent study (PDF, 419KB) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Teenage births have been on the decline since 2001, aside from a two-year rise between 2005 and 2007. In spite of the downward trend, however, teenage birthrates remain high across many U.S. states, including Texas, where EngenderHealth has launched a teenage pregnancy prevention project, Gender Matters. The five-year program addresses the impact of gender norms on sexual behavior among both adolescent boys and girls in Austin, Texas, where teenage pregnancy exceeds the state average.
